Pilots Receive Award for Bravery

The Tribune - 10/20/2020

At the Port of Santos, they received an international courage award for preventing a serious accident between two freighters on April 28 last year, at the Port of São Sebastião, on the North Coast of São Paulo.

The accident happened when two oil tankers were transferring oil between them (a maneuver called ship to ship), when the mooring cables broke due to the storm that hit the region.

Pilots Márcio Santos Teixeira and Fábio Rodrigues Alves de Abreu were recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for their “Exceptional Bravery at Sea”. A pilot from the Philippines was also awarded in the same category, which had a total of 31 nominations, presented by several countries

Pilots Honored with Highest Award for Bravery

Pilotage from Brazil - 10/19/2020

Considered the highest recognition of the world maritime community, the IMO Award for Outstanding Bravery at Sea, from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), was awarded this year to two Brazilian pilots. Marcio Santos Teixeira and Fábio Rodrigues Alves de Abreu avoided a serious accident with two loaded oil tankers that were adrift in the storm that hit São Sebastião (SP), on April 28, 2019. They were chosen among 31 competitors from 18 countries and two organizations non-governmental. The award will be presented at the IMO headquarters in London, on a date to be announced.

"As a result of the courageous actions of the pilot Teixeira and the pilot Abreu, no more lives were lost, serious damage to the pier structures and oil installations was prevented and an incident that could generate major marine pollution was avoided", states the IMO document that announced the winners.

For the president of São Paulo Pilotage, Carlos Alberto de Souza Filho, the award reveals the importance of the activity as essential for the public interest:

– We work 24 hours a day in any weather and in any condition, with the priority of preserving safety, responding to emergencies and guaranteeing operations. Pilotage is an activity that involves many risks. We have knowledge, technique, courage and determination as basic principles for exercising our profession, as our brave pilots have proven.

Pilots from São Paulo Receive International Award for Bravery

Porto Gente - 10/20/2020

For avoiding a serious accident in Ilhabela, the pilots Marcio Santos Teixeira and Fábio Rodrigues Alves de Abreu won the IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea, reinforcing a work that strives 24 hours a day for safety at sea and in the community.

For almost six hours, pilots Marcio Santos Teixeira and Fábio Rodrigues Alves de Abreu faced a storm on April 28, 2019 with gusts of over 130 km/hour (70 knots), waves of 1.5 to 2 meters, constant rain , a lot of tension and a huge challenge ahead: in the midst of this chaos, safely anchor two oil tankers loaded and hitched to each other by steel cables. These ships were adrift in the São Sebastião Channel, carried by the force of the sea currents and heading dangerously towards Ilhabela, putting its residents and the environment at risk.

And if that wasn't enough stress for the captains of the two ships and the crew, they even had to interrupt the delicate operation to remove a crew member in critical condition and send him ashore to try to be treated quickly at the hospital.
